Phosphenes (Seeing Stars)
BOOK DESIGN
Phosphenes (Seeing Stars) gives an idiosyncratic overview of the oeuvre of the Bulgarian artist Denitsa Todorova. Works and installation photographs are interspersed with personal studio images of the artist, providing a unique insight into the creation process of the artworks. The process and the works are further explained by means of a series of texts and poems that were specially written for this publication by Philippe Van Cauteren, Peter Verhelst, Pieter Vermeulen and Eric Min.
The book was conceptually designed and printed to resemble the works of art of Denitsa. Her drawings are made mostly with graphite on thin paper that becomes, more and more yellow over time. This concept was executed through the ink and papers used inside of the book. The black ink was custom mixed with silver to create a graphite-like effect. There are five different papers inside going from dark grey, to light grey, to white, to natural, to yellow. The minimalistic grey softcover is wrapped in a folded poster of her work, printed on wafer-thin paper.
